Acer Predator Triton 700 Review – Macbook Game
(Acer Predator Triton 700) What should be the perfect gaming laptop? Thin. Easy But the main thing – powerful. Powerful, not “for its class.”
However, if you come to the store with such a request, the sales assistant with a helpful smile will offer to play “there are two chairs.” On one – all sorts of ultrabooks: light, compact and elegant, but completely unsuitable for any games heavier than the card. On the other – monstrous “vandervafly,” capable of giving the necessary power, but looking like a blast furnace in a narcotic frenzy of an abstractionist.
Many gamers faced such a choice, and year after year their fantasies about a perfect laptop were crumbling. But the outgoing 2017 gave us something that previously seemed impossible – gaming ultrabooks — compact like Apple products, but at the same time powerful, like a top PC. Perhaps one of the most impressive devices of the new wave is the Acer Predator Triton 700.
His predecessor, the Predator 21 X, which was acclaimed for its impressive performance and no less impressive price, could be called anything but a compact one. But “Triton” is deprived of deficiencies in the form of excess weight and a very high price. But with everything else – full order.
At this stage, three versions of Triton 700 are available for purchase (all three are with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor):
- NVIDIA GTX 1080 video card (8 GB GDDR5X), 32 GB DDR4 memory, 1 024 GB SSD (RAID 0 512×2 NVMe PCIe );
- NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card (6 GB GDDR5), 16 GB DDR4 memory, 1 024 GB SSD (RAID-0 512×2);
- NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card (6 GB GDDR5), 16 GB DDR4 memory, 512 GB SSD (RAID-0 256×2).
We, as you understand, got the top one, so let’s talk about it.
Let’s start with the thickness because the new Predator Triton 700 is easily comparable in size with the latest MacBooks: its height is only 19 mm. With a weight of 2.4 kg, this makes the laptop almost the best option for purchase. It should be noted that you will not find much diversity in this segment. Only ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS comes to mind for comparison, which is comparable in size, design, and quality. But this is, as they say, a matter of taste.
The mysterious cap on the left panel attracts attention. Under it is a classic USB 2.0 port, “recessed” inside the laptop. At first glance, a strange design solution. But after a moment, you realize that this connector is not for flash drives, but for wireless mice: USB 3.0 doesn’t need them, and their “dongles” (the part stuck into the connector) usually stick out, threatening to break the connector at the first careless movement. Providently.
For some, this may not seem too important, but, as they say, the devil is in the details. If we talk about the power supply, it is dimensional (and how do you want?) Chicony weighing 1 kg and a power of 230 watts. In general, sets up a serious way.
Outwardly, everything is strict and concise. The only thing that stands out from the overall picture is the Predator “Decepticon” logo and the slightly embellished cooling system. Plus, almost the entire body is made of aluminum (except for the frame around the screen and the keyboard). Of course, it affects the weight of the device, but at the same time significantly adds reliability.
The lid is opened at 135 degrees, and because of the lightness of the structure itself, as well as the use of quite tight loops in it, it keeps well and does not hang out at all. They are four rubber feet on the bottom and three air intakes. The front side is not particularly remarkable, but the rear outputs of the HDMI and DisplayPort, as well as the port for connecting an external power supply, are displayed. On the left, in addition to the hidden USB connector, there are also two USB 3.0 ports, a Kensington lock slot and two mini jacks for 3.5 mm. Another USB 3.0 is on the right, a full-fledged RJ-45 port (for a network cable), as well as a Thunderbolt 3 connector, combined with USB 3.1 C-type.
The keyboard is a low-profile mechanical, scissor-type, with a tight touch. It is located somewhat closer to the user than many are accustomed to, which is caused by necessity: the panel above the buttons is also part of the cooling system. Someone might like this design more than a classic. And for someone it will be comfortable to play, just moving the laptop away from you to the maximum distance. But this is not critical.
But, in our opinion, it is rather critical when a 300,000 laptop, which, to be honest, asks for the inclusion of news on the ultrax, is equipped with some kind of indistinct HD camera.
The same bewilderment the first time causes the area above the keyboard. The first question that arises by itself is to open the Predator Triton 700: so where are they going to touchpad? It turns out that a decorative transparent panel, under which working coolers are visible, is what it is. And this panel is not just plastic but toughened Corning Gorilla Glass 0.7 mm thick. It looks, it should be noted, all this is very stylish. And the touchpad itself is implemented very soundly, with amazing accuracy and responsiveness (the parallels with the “MacBook” do not stop asking for it).
The only thing to use it for a long time would still be hardly convenient simply because of the location. However, the laptop is positioned as a gaming device, so those who buy it will probably immediately connect a mouse. From this point of view, the decision of the designers looks much more justified: the dimensions of the compact laptop are limited, and sacrificing the keyboard by squeezing the touchpad on the side is not the way out. Let the keyboard itself be closer to the player, and if you need to quickly select something without connecting a mouse, here, you are the panel, which usually performs purely aesthetic functions, demonstrating the cooling system.
By the way, everything related to this system is done according to the highest standard. It is felt that the engineers did their best. No joke – a full-fledged top-end video card, capable of pulling any game on the “ultra,” is crammed into a laptop. And which requires appropriate heat dissipation. So with this, there is a full set of ammunition: a special design of the Max-Q cooling system from NVIDIA itself, five heat pipes, and all this are blown by ultra-thin AeroBlade 3D coolers. So the video card can safely give all the power that is capable of.

Games running on the Acer Predator Triton 700 are much more likely to rest on the speed of the hard drive or the delay of the Internet when playing on the Web than in the GPU. But here, the laptop will pleasantly surprise its owner. Now hard drives in laptops are a very bad form, so it’s clear that SSD is also installed here. That’s just not a simple SSD, but a high-speed one, via NVMe. And there are two of them: in the RAID-0 array, which almost doubles the already fast speed of work. What does it mean? That games are loaded just instantly.
And to reduce the network response (ping) in a laptop system implemented Killer DoubleShot Pro. It makes Wi-Fi and local network work together to limit any delays in online games.
With such heavy artillery, it would be a shame if the games ran into the processor. So he is also a match – the seventh generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ. He is fully capable of preparing over a hundred frames per second. But why? What is the point of producing such a frame rate if an ordinary monitor cannot display more than 60?
And the facts of the matter is that a 120 Hz IPS matrix is installed in the laptop … with G-Sync support. This is the most top-notch Full HD gaming experience that is currently possible.
In theory, it would be necessary to please you with the tests of the latest games on the top-end hardware, but, honestly, we consider this to be frank vulgarity – buying a laptop for that kind of money, then sit fps … And it’s clear that everything will not go, but fly, and there is no need to cause the audience to unprovoked attacks of envy. For we, as you probably understand, will also have to part with the Acer Predator Triton 700. Review – a temporary matter.
What can I add – the top thing? Like any top thing, it costs a huge pile of money. Not as huge as the Predator 21 X, but, you see, not even every hundredth here will be able to afford such a “toy.” But the one who can will be satisfied with the purchase of another five years.
